About
Spanning over three decades, James Woolsey’s career includes a variety of industry and government positions supporting the mission of the U.S. Department of Defense.
He is currently leading efforts to transform the Defense Acquisition Workforce as the president of Defense Acquisition University. As DAU’s Chief Learning Officer, he is responsible for ensuring more than 160,000 members of the Defense Acquisition Workforce receive the fundamental training, on-siteacquisition-support, and resources they need to successfully deliver capabilities to the Warfighter. Mr. Woolsey oversees DAU’s global spanning five regional campuses, two national colleges, and a robust online learning environment.
Prior to serving as DAU’s president, Woolsey was the first Deputy Director for Performance Assessments in the Office of Performance Assessment and Root Cause Analyses. In this position, he created the processes and practices that allowed the office to perform is statutory responsibilities and to provide actionable data to key leaders in the U.S. Department of Defense.
He was previously an Assistant Director at the Institute for Defense Analysis. In this role Woolsey’s responsibilities included managing the Cost Analysis and Research Division’s research and leading a wide-range of cost and acquisition studies. His work included several congressionally-directed studies on multiple airframes, missile systems, and launch vehicles.
Woolsey earned a Master of Business Administration degree from George Mason University and a Bachelor of Science in aerospace engineering degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He was also a fellow in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Seminar XXI on Internal Relations.
He is an avid cyclist and enjoys “jamming” on the harmonica.
